There are a number of identities I align myself with — being black and my mother’s son, a child of Atlanta, an American man, and a late 80s baby that came of age during 9/11, Katrina, Obama, the recession, and Trump. The people that share these realities, I feel a kinship toward, a responsibility for.
One other that I’ve realized more recently, being a blogger. It used to be my hobby and then my job, but stepping away from it (at a consistent, fast-paced clip) for almost a decade has made me realize how central the act is to my entire existence.
There’s a curiosity crucial to the form, one that I’m actively attempting to recapture. A passion for sharing, informing, engaging, entertaining. And during the 2010s, I typically had a smile on my face as I typed hundreds and thousands of words, about a thing I experienced or consumed.
There was a period during this stretch of years where I would think in Tweets. During my first stint as a TV writer, my brain could not stop thinking in dialogue, and when I worked at Twitter my thoughts fully morphed into short, concise copywriting. And right now, as I finalize the edit of my book, I think about everything in big, sweeping, interconnected scenes.
My favorite way to think, however, is when I saw the world through 500 word blurbs and 1200 word blog posts. I miss it. So much so, in fact, that I’ve dedicated Q3 to the art of blogging.
Welcome to HOW TO BLOG
This will not be a Masterclass and I will not be discussing writing as a craft. But I did a deep dive into my archive and saw that there were styles of blogs that I constantly leaned on, ones that typically worked.
As an Unc, I am often asked about stepping into writing online in 2025. Typically, the conversations are about where — do I go on Threads? do I start a Substack? But rarely is the chat about how to bite off small chunks of culture for public consumption.
Each post this quarter will be dedicated to 8 types of blogging that I think work. And styles that can be on video, can be on audio, but I think are best when read.

I won’t be explaining how to do these, I’m just going to do it. And to restore the old feeling of pressure and stress and excitement, I’m going to write the entire Q3 site on September 30th, which is today.
APOLOGIES FOR BEING A DAY LATE. I HAVE SINNED.
The older people get, the better they are at giving orders and telling folks how to do things. But they often lose the ability to do it themselves. It’s one of my truest fears. Which is why I’m just going to do it. Because I’m a blog boi. Blogs 4 lyfe.
